Australian works in 2017: The rankings

It’s the most glorious time of the year! I’ve been a-counting and a-gnashing! And with it, I begin the task of considering Australian content in the seasons of our major music organisations.

  • The count is from season publicity- ie the publicly available brochure- so typically doesn’t include education and other outreach programs which often aren’t detailed in the brochure at this stage.
  • This also  means that sometimes works are probably missed for programs where the repertoire is announced closer to the performance, such as mini-festivals and special presentations.
  • Similarly, for opera companies I have excluded programs such as recitals and galas for the same reason (and considering how unlikely it is that an Australian work sneaks into these musical buffets, I don’t think they’ll affect numbers in any way).
  • I am working with numbers only and sometimes these numbers don’t align with how interesting I think the overall season may be (and… sometimes they do).
  • The big gap is choirs/voice. I don’t know how to start tackling that lot. My rough guide is “full time-ish, with admin/management staff”. I can only think of one, which defeats the purpose of ranking. Very open to suggestions on developing a choral division- I suspect that the results would be very pleasing.
